In the Work view, click the appropriate step with a tool that let you record or edit audio files. Some tool enable different controls and features so you might not see all the possibilities discussed in this Help topic.

Play Item helps you learn how to transcribe or download the audio you just recording or edited.
If you will use experimental features, you need an Internet connection. If you use Desktop, you must be online.
The person speaking needs a microphone.
A headset or speakers so you can listen to the recording.
If you see Record Retelling or Question and Answer controls, select () one of them.
Your selection will become part of the audio file name to distinguish the files by their type.
If you see a Speaker field, type the name of the person who will be speaking. Provide rights if necessary.
Here are other controls you might see and choose to use:
Versions opens a Versions dialog box, if there are existing audio files.
Then, you can download () a particular version of an audio file.
Upload Audio opens the Upload Audio dialog box so you can upload the audio file you want. You can manually select a portion of the vernacular audio waveform and then upload the audio. Then you will see the start and end time stamps of that selected portion as the Source Segment in the Select Item dialog box.
Launch Audacity opens the Audacity Manager dialog box so you can work with Audacity to get the audio file you want (Desktop only).
(Auto Segment) and associated controls so you can use the segmenter.
You can select a portion of the vernacular waveform manually. Then, you might see these lines:
Segment: It automatically shows the start-end time of that portion.
Topic: You can type a topic for the selected portion of the waveform.
Select () Compressed for a compressed (*.ogg) file or clear (
) it for an uncompressed (*.wav) file.
Click (Record) or press the keyboard shortcut (F9 or Ctrl + 9) and have the speaker talk into your microphone.
Click (Pause) or press the keyboard shortcut (F9 or Ctrl + 9) when the speaking finished or want to pause recording for a moment.
Click (Play) or press the keyboard shortcut (F1 or Ctrl + Space) to listen to your recording for quality and usability.
Optionally, if the step (and tool) allows you, you can do any of the following:
Select a portion of the audio waveform that you do not want to keep, and then click (Delete Region).
Click (Undo) to undo the deletion.
If Reduce NoiseAI is selected in the Team Settings dialog box, or the Personal Settings dialog box, click (Reduce NoiseAI) to use this experimental feature. If you do not need to reduce the noise for the entire audio file, select the portion that is too noisy before you click Reduce NoiseAI.
If Convert VoiceAI is selected in the Team Settings dialog box, or the Personal Settings dialog box, click (Convert Voice <speaker>AI) to use this experimental feature. See

Click (Delete Entire Recording) to delete it if you want to start over.
Click the Book control and then click a book. Then, examine the Name control and edit the name if necessary.
Click Save.
Click Load Latest Audio if the audio file you want to edit is not already loaded (you see the audio waveform).
Important: The Latest Version control (
) in the Versions dialog box controls what is the latest version.
Do any of these steps:
If you see a long moment of silence or another region you want to remove, select that region in the waveform, and then click (Delete Region).
Click (Undo) to undo the deletion.
If you want to insert or overwrite a region of new audio, do these steps:
Click the point in the waveform where you want to start recording.
Record new audio and stop immediately to avoid overwriting content you want with silence.
If you want to add a region of silence, do these steps:
Click the area in the waveform where you want the silence to begin.
Type a duration in seconds in the Seconds control.
Click (Silence).
Select () Compressed for a compressed (*.ogg) file or clear (
) it for an uncompressed (*.wav) file.
Click Save.
Notice that in Name line, the version number of the audio file increases.
(Convert Voice <speaker>AI) is available before you save a new audio recording.
In this case, the recorded Provide Rights voice sample must be already available. You can choose a name, but not record a new sample at this time.
