Steps are the series of actions that you complete to accomplish your goal.
Tools define steps. The combination of steps and their order defines your workflow.
You and any team members are not forced to any particular work flow. For example, you might want to do one step for all the passages in a section instead of completing all the steps for one passage.
Where you see steps:
Steps appear as a series of buttons along the top of the Work view.

You can use the Team Settings dialog box to select () the desired workflow progression, either Next Passage or Next Step.
The check mark means the Step Complete check box is selected for that step.
Arrows () and (
) appear in Work if your screen width cannot display all the steps. They help you move to the next or previous steps.
Below these step buttons, you see the passages that are in the current section are shown (example). You can click them to move between passages. Hierarchical layout only.
A Step column appears in the Sections & Passages tab.
In a hierarchical layout, there is a step button for each passage in each section. For a flat layout, there is one step button for each section. The step is the first step that is not complete.
Click a step button to open the passage in the Work view to that step.
A colored circle on a step informs you how many discussions are assigned to you, or to a peer group you are in.
